EU Bans Destruction of Unsold Textiles and Footwear from 2026

The European Commission has adopted final measures under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) prohibiting the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear.

From 19 July 2026, large companies placing apparel, accessories and footwear on the EU market will no longer be permitted to destroy unsold goods. Medium-sized companies will follow in 2030. Small and micro enterprises are exempt.

In addition to the ban itself, large companies will be required — from 2027 onwards — to publicly disclose the quantities of unsold products treated as waste and the reasons for doing so. Exceptions to the ban are narrowly defined and must be justified.

The objective of the regulation is to reduce textile waste, prevent unnecessary environmental impact and support the transition toward a more circular European economy.
